Welcome to Grandmothers for Refugees, formerly known as Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children.

Established in 2014, we are a nationwide collective of volunteer grandmothers and friends – affectionately called FROGS.
Our mission is to drive change in Australian government policy regarding asylum seekers, advocating for a compassionate reception, fair assessment of refugee status, proper care, safety, support, and, when suitable, a path to permanent residency.
We pay homage to the pioneering women who launched this movement, showcasing unwavering determination.
We aim to raise awareness within the broader community about the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers. Central to our cause is a dedicated focus on children, and those who arrived in Australia as minors. We stand as staunch allies for individuals who have suffered under Australia's harsh offshore and onshore asylum processing system, both physically and psychologically.
Operating at the grassroots level, we organise into local groups based on federal electorate boundaries. Our membership network spans across 90+ federal electorates nationwide.

How we advocate

Lobby members of parliament
Writing letters, seeking meetings, staging vigils and petitions, making submissions to government inquiries, attending refugee rallies and supporting emerging refugee led advocacy campaigns.
Community engagement We actively engage the local community by submitting letters and articles to newspapers, distributing information at community events such as local markets, conducting information sessions for local groups and engaging with social media.
