Ms Ley said her visit to the US only strengthened her view of the success of multiculturalism in Australia.
"I am a huge supporter of the Australian multicultural project for the simple reason that we have been able to achieve multicultural Australia not by erasing people's differences but by giving them space to belong," Ms Ley told 7.30.
"I think this is something we should all be incredibly proud of.
"I'm not a political commentator for the US, but I didn't see communities melting together like I see here.
"In fact, I saw different communities from different backgrounds sitting very uncomfortably alongside each other."
